Ranja: People say that the UK dub sound is very special.
Steve: Yeah, I think it is, I think we`ve got a tradition, a long
tradition of it here, because when the music changed in the 1980s, when you know
the raggamuffin style and the dancehall style came in, and a lot of people
stopped doing roots music. In England there was always a core of people, myself
included, who were still into it. And there`s a big sound system here
called Jah Shaka, he really is responsible for keeping the whole roots scene going, he never changed over. I think that has really influenced
a lot of people to
start making roots music and dub music in England now. So it`s kind of
ironic that, you know, dub all came from Jamaica originally, but nobody in
Jamaica is really making it nowadays, most of it is being made in England.

Steve: I`ve been involved with reggae for a long time, really. First of all as a listener, then I used to be a DJ on a radio station in
London. And then I met some people who were starting a sound system and
they asked me to get involved with that as a selecter. And I became more
and more involved with the sound system, and gradually we started producing
music for dubplates. And the label was almost an accident, really, it just
started off, as I say, producing a lot of music to play on the sound system. And then, that was in the early 1990s a lot of people in England started their
own small independent labels and started releasing music themselves. And I
had all this music lying about that I wasn`t really doing anything with, and one
day a friend of mine he said to me: why don`t you think about releasing some of
this yourself? And I`d never really thought of it myself, but I thought I`ll give it a go, see what happens. We put a single out called "The
22. book" by Naph-Tali, and it was very successful in England, and everything grew from there really, that was in 1995.

Steve: A dubplate is like a one-off acetate disc. It`s like a
metal disc with a very thin layer of acetate on it, and they`re quite expensive
to produce, much more expensive than vinyl. And mostly it`s sound systems
and some radio DJs who get them. You might get an exclusive one-off mix of
a rhythm or a dub that nobody else in the world has got, and that`s only yours.
So instead of pressing it onto vinyl which is very, very expensive to do, you
cut it onto a dubplate, so then it`s yours and you can play it.
